Where each PRINCE2 management product lives: ZenTao and ProjeQtOr compared

·

ZenTao and ProjeQtOr sit at the same tier of our portfolio, and the question we are asked most often is which one to run. The answer turns on what you are accountable for rather than on feature counts, so this is the mapping itself — every PRINCE2 management product against where it actually lives in each tool.

Where each management product lives

Both carry most of the method natively. They differ in which accountability they serve best: ZenTao answers the questions an auditor asks about a release, ProjeQtOr the questions a steering committee asks about plan, cost and risk. Where a management product has no native home we say so rather than stretch the mapping.

ZenTao

Strongest where the evidence chain matters: which requirement, which test, which release.

ProjeQtOr

Strongest where plan, cost and risk matter: what was committed, what it cost, what is exposed.

Lessons Log
No native home — we build it

Neither ships a Lessons Log as a first-class record. On ZenTao the knowledge base absorbs it; on ProjeQtOr we build it, either as an approved document versioned at each stage boundary or as a dedicated record type where it has to be searchable across projects.

Where ZenTao pulls ahead: the traceability chain

The mapping above is convenient. The chain below is the reason to choose ZenTao at all — every link in it is queryable, which is what turns ‘we follow a process’ into evidence.

  1. Business Case
  2. Project Product
  3. Product Description
  4. Requirement
  5. User Story
  6. Development Task
  7. Code
  8. Test
  9. Defect
  10. Accepted Product

Stages outside, sprints inside

The structure that follows is the cleanest reading of PRINCE2 Agile we know: PRINCE2 stages provide management control, agile sprints provide the delivery mechanism, and the stage boundary is where the board actually decides something.

Initiating a ProjectBoard authorises
Stage 1 — Requirements and architectureSprint 1 · Sprint 2 · Sprint 3 → stage assessment
Stage 2 — DevelopmentSprint 4 · Sprint 5 · Sprint 6 → stage assessment
Stage 3 — DeploymentAcceptance → closing a project
